Tualatin Heritage Center: 100 Years of Local History.
The little Craftsman church that neighbors hand-built in 1926 now stands as Tualatin's oldest surviving church anda community museum celebrating its centennial. Here is the story, and why it is worth a visit this year.
The Tualatin Heritage Center at 8700 SW Sweek Dr is a community museum and event venue managed by the Tualatin Historical Society in partnership with the City of Tualatin. It is one of the few remaining historic buildings in town, and 2026 marks a full century since volunteers raised its walls by hand.
For prospective residents, the Heritage Center is more than a museum: it is proof of how much this community values its roots. Families moving to neighborhoods near 22379 SW 107th Ave will quickly find that Tualatin pairs modern convenience with a genuine sense of history.
Born in 1926
Built by hand, saved by neighbors.
The building's story starts with tragedy. After a fire destroyed the congregation's home near Community Park in 1925, members rallied around one another and hand-built a new Craftsman-style church along Boones Ferry Road in 1926. For the next 80 years it served as Tualatin's only church. ”
By the early 2000s, the building faced an uncertain future: the City needed to widen Boones Ferry Road, and the little white church was in the way. Instead of demolition, neighbors chose preservation: the building was donated to the Tualatin Historical Society, carefully moved in 2006 to its current home next to the police station, and reborn as the Heritage Center.
