Día de los Muertos in Tualatin: altar, crafts, and a family celebration.

The Tualatin Public Library honors Día de los Muertos this fall with a community altar, a family celebration on October 30, and free sugar skull workshops, all minutes from 22379 SW 107th Ave.

Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is an annual celebration rooted in Mexican tradition that remembers and honors loved ones who have passed, with altars, marigolds, favorite foods, and photographs. In Tualatin, the public library on SW Martinazzi Ave has become the heart of the local observance, and the 2026 lineup is its most complete yet, with something for every age from late October into November.

The centerpiece is a community altar, or ofrenda, that will be on display at the library from Tuesday, October 27 through Tuesday, November 10. Neighbors are invited to bring a photo of a loved one to add to the altar, turning the display into a true community remembrance that grows with each visit. It is a free, drop-in way to take part, and it pairs naturally with the fall events calendar filling up around town.

At the library

Three ways to take part near home.

Community Altar ofrenda

October 27 - November 10, library hours

The community ofrenda is on display at the library for two weeks. Bring a photo of a loved one to add to the altar any time during the display window, and stop back later in the run to see how the ofrenda has grown.

Día de los Muertos family celebration

Friday, October 30, 5:30-7:30 PM, Community Room

The free family celebration fills the Community Room with crafts, pan dulce, and activities for all ages. An ideal first stop before Halloween weekend gets going.

Sugar skull workshops

Two free sessions in October, pre-registration required

Artist Nelda Reyes leads free Day of the Dead sugar skull, or calaveritas de azúcar, decorating workshops at the library. Seats are limited and registration is required, so check the library event calendar early to claim a spot.

A day trip

Milagro's Muertos celebration in Portland.

For a bigger dose of the holiday, Teatro Milagro in Portland runs the Central Eastside Muertos Celebration, one of the region's longest-running Day of the Dead observances, from early October through November 10. It brings together altar displays, community events, and live performances in the theater's signature bilingual style, about a 25-minute drive up I-5 from Tualatin.

The combination is a great late-fall outing: mark the family celebration at the Tualatin library on October 30, visit the community altar over the following week with kids' crafts in hand, and save a weekend for the Portland festival for the full measure of music, memory, and marigolds.
